Morning Trevor,

1 Swift over the pool this a.m. amongst the other hirundines, 1 Reed warbler ( heard), Blackcap, Willow warbler, Chiffchaff and 2 Water Rail. Also 1 male Reed bunting.

Report John Rance.

Thank you for the report John. I have never seen a Water Rail at PBP. Never heard one either !!!!

  1. Best place to look for them is along the footpath that runs along the back of the pool- pause for a few minutes at one of the gaps in the vegetation where you can see the back of the reedbed and there's usually one or two about. Mainly winter visitors but I wouldn't be at all suprised if they breed on site. I usually pick them up by looking for the vibrations in the water as they move about- its amazing how easily and nimbly they move between the reeds. Stunning birds really.

  2. I have seen them at St Andrews quite often but being deaf does not help in looking for a shy bird.
