I took a short walk down to Spit Beach at lunchtime, once the drizzle had eased off! On the rocks between the beach and the harbour four Common Sandpipers and a Curlew could be seen, along with the usual Oystercatchers (12). Half a dozen Gannets were plunge-diving offshore, between the harbour and Polkerris. A single Sandwich Tern was also present.

Took my sister boyfriend who is a keen novice birder from Switzerland down to Spit Beach at High Tide (around 3:30pm) and saw the following of note :
6 nesting Herring Gulls and 1 nesting Lesser Black Backed on the roof on the Imerys works to the left of the Iron Bridge on the path leading towards the beach. Also 4 Chiffchaff feeding around the pipes on small insects/flies.
On the rocks at the beach were 2 Common Sandpiper and 1 Adult Med Gull
In the harbour there were 2 Lesser Black Backed Gull , 1 of which was very dark indeed and probably of the variety Larus fuscus fuscus (Baltic sea, Eastern Scandinavia).
Report Marko Owlman
Thank you Phil and Marko for the reports. Not the ideal sort of day weatherwise so I am glad you were both rewarded with sightings.

ReplyDeleteGood to see you're back Owlman, and your successful visit to Spit. I was only saying to Andy today:'tis time we had some Comm.Sands back. No idea then that the Owlman had seen them, together with sundry goodies such as the Med gull and particularly the 'fuscus'LBBG gull, excellent bird. Good on ya!
